PlayStation Network Releases: August 2nd – Galaga Legions DX

A blast from the past done in HD and so much more in this week’s PlayStation Network releases.

Retro revivals are one of today’s gaming trends that whether for better or worse, introduces us to the history of a particular legend in our industry. This week as part of what’s new on the PlayStation Network, comes another such enhanced trip down memory lane with Galaga Legions DX.

Based on the classic 1981 arcade shooter from Namco, Galaga Legions DX, as with many other titles of its kind say Pac-Man Championship Edition DX (also from Namco,) reintroduces the simple gameplay of the original, but with a modern current generation twist. And in the case of Legions DX, players are given more than just a single shot laser to take down enemy aliens.

Galaga Legions DX features the inclusion of two satellites, which players use to control with the right analog stick to point and destroy opposing spacecraft. Now this is where the crux of the game’s mechanics come into place — because during many points in Legions you will be collapsed upon a insurmountable wave of aliens.

It’s here that you must figure our a way to position your two satellites, along with positioning your ship strategically, in order to defeat the countless hoards of enemies that fill the screen. Behold! The nightmarish terror that can be Galaga Legions DX!

The simple trick of course, and you’ll quickly notice it at the beginning of your space campaign, is to take out the one alien ship which controls the others. By eliminating that particular ship, it instantly wipes out all other ships tied to it.

An awesome effect that clears the level in a blitz of dazzling lights! The colors duke, the colors! Oh you might just go colorblind, kid! Toss in a techno-popping soundtrack, and at a reasonable $9.99 — you’ve got a sweet downloadable title that will keep the digital quarters rolling.
