Jurassic Park: The Game, BurgerTime World Tour, and so much awesomely more are primed and ready for this week’s PlayStation Network Releases, November 15, 2011 edition. Check it!

Dinosaurs and hamburgers, is there a more better combination? Oh, I should think not. And wonderfully, it comes this week in the tight tandem of Jurassic Park: The Game and BurgerTime World Tour; two new digital games up right now on the PlayStation Store.

With Jurassic Park: The Game, players return to the island that started it all — you know, the one with dinosaurs that somehow end up getting lose from their cages and then attack their keepers (they should really close that place down, I tell ya) — in a four part episodic adventure series from the pros at the sub-genre, Telltale Games. The San Rafael, California studio worked closely with Universal Studios to create an awesome re-imagining of the island and the prehistoric beasts that live there.

T-Rex, triceratops, and those wily loveable velociraptors are all excitingly here in Jurassic Park: The Game, right beside the marvelous sounds of John Williams’ familiar soundtrack and a story filled with suspenseful twists and heart-pumping action. Surely fans of both Telltale Games or the Jurassic Park films will be right at home — cozy and warm — with this episodic title, if not, then how about clinching your hands on a meaty modern take on a classic arcade game. Hmm?

That would be BurgerTime World Tour, which started as a classic 1982 Data East game where users help Chef Peter Pepper allude hotdogs, fried eggs, and pickles to build… well, hamburgers of course! Hey, it was a simpler time back then. And notably — without that charming simplicity, no one would probably remember BurgerTime so fondly or as passionately as the fine fellows (or gals) down at Monkey Paw Games, who have transformed the quaint pixel sprites of ole’ into brightly colored 3D world (not as bright as PixelJunk: SideScroller though).

Like many applauded retro-revivals, BurgerTime World Tour keeps it’s memorable core gameplay in honored tact while adding a few interesting drops of flavor, say rocket-packs and what not, to mix it up. Truly this game, and a cheap on at $9.99, is a work of much fevered love from Monkey Paw and should definitely be checked out if you’ve got the time to do so on the PlayStation Store.

PlayStation Network Releases, November 1st: Hydrophobia: Prophecy, More PS2 Classics

It’s November 1st, 2011, which means a new month with a lot of new stuff, including this week, Hydrophobia: Prophecy and three new PlayStation 2 Classics.

Obviously the really big news this first week of November is the launch of Naughty Dog’s Uncharted 3 in North America – I’m sure you’ve heard about it plenty enough – and while Drake’s latest quest throws players through the sun-scorched sandy drenches of the Rub’ al Khali desert located in the Arabian Peninsula, Hydrophobia: Prophecy on the other hand, makes great use of an opposite, but almost equally adversarial, element.

Water. A force of nature which can take many forms and in large amounts can be seriously deadly. It’s this constant threat throughout Hydrophobia, as you, Kate Wilson, try to escape a sinking underwater city (I’m guessing the builders never saw the movie Titanic) by risking though dangerous pathways filled with flooded obstacles and electricity-prone hazards. PlayStation Plus subscribers get the game free for November ($10 regular price), so if you’re still thirsty (see what I did there!) for more adventure once you’ve put down Uncharted 3, how about giving Dark Energy Digital’s recent creation a dive! (See what I did there again!)

Also available this week, Sony returns to the endless catalog of PlayStation 2 games and retrieves three new titles to download: Raiden III from Seibu Kaihatsu, Bloodrayne from Terminal Reality (oh hey, the made Ghostbusters: The Video Game), and Harvest Moon: Save the Homeland from Natsume. Personally, if last week’s PixelJunk SideScroller left you itching for Japanese-centric 2D shooters, it’s a good itch believe me, Raiden III is your best bet to ease that affliction. Pretty pseudo-3D graphics and a neat power-up mechanic that let’s you level-up specific weapons is what’s in store if you pick up this absolute gem of PS2 game for the absolute steal of a price — so please, check it out!

It’s the final week of October and we celebrate with the last two Only On PSN games, PixelJunk SideScroller & inFamous 2: Festival of Blood, in the October 25th, 2011 edition of the PlayStation Network Releases.

We sadly say goodbye this week to the Only On PSN campaign, which began this very October, with again two exclusive PlayStation Network titles, Q-Games’ fantastic homage to arcade space-ship shooters, in the vein of Gradius and the like, PixelJunk SideScroller (we did a short preview of the game a long while back, check it out), and just in time to get into the spooky spirit of Halloween, a separate downloadable expansion to one of this year’s best games for the PlayStation 3, inFamous 2: Festival of Blood.

A dark sinister force invades New Marais, inFamous 2′s New Orleans-esque setting, and it’s up to Cole MacGrath to defend his turf with a dangerous set of new powers — vampire powers. DUN, DUN, DUNNN! Right at the beginning of Festival of Blood, Cole gets bitten by a nasty blood-sucker and to save himself and the city from becoming the next vampire hot-spot, our hero must search out the head vampire (hint: he wears a red cape and a tux) and kill him/her/it. What? You thought maybe they would share a box of tasty-sweet beignets at the end of the game and talk the whole thing over? Heck no!

Festival of Blood is deeply darker all throughout, as evident by one of the first trailers showing Cole as a vampire violently sinking his fangs into an unsuspecting victim as spray of blood pours from the wound, and as such, brings a John Carpenter’s Vampires feel to the inFamous franchise that includes new missions, grimly-themed environments, plus new character and enemies all for just $10. Nice. Probably one of the best pre-Halloween “trick or treat” goodies ever, so enjoy!

But it’s not all hauntingly-themed trappings this PlayStation Network Releases go around, there’s other new offerings like Daytona USA and a new demo for Sonic Generations to try. Don’t forget also about the batch of downloadable content now available for Gran Turismo 5, which we wrote about here of course, that features new tracks, new cars, and new in-game options to dress-up your racing avatar.

The last week of October sees the release of a whole lot of sweet DLC for Gran Turismo 5. Come inside to find out all the details and pricing!

With the free Spec II Patch and the $39.99 price cut speeding well off into the distance, the plans for new downloadable content for Gran Turismo 5 is about take off from the starting line itself on Tuesday, October 25th, when the PlayStation Store naturally updates its storefront. Four individual DLC packs specifically will be up for retail, feature new racing tracks, customization options, and cars galore.

You can buy each pack, which I’ve gone ahead and laboriously detailed below, separately if your so chose, or you can buy them at one in complete pack for the awesome low, low price of $11.99. Purchased on their own, all four packs go for around $20, meaning you get about a ten dollar or so discount just for bundling up. Ah, yeah!

Course Pack — 2 Tracks, 5 Layouts ($4.99)

Only two new courses in one pack might sound skimpy, sure, but for how awesomely detailed they both are it’s highway robbery for the price you’re getting them at. That said, this course pack contains the historic eastern-Belgium located Circuit de Spa Francorchamps track (with weather effects to boot), and for go-kart lovers, the sparkly neon playground that is Kart Space layouts I & II (both layouts supporting normal and reverse options).

Racing Car Pack — 15 Cars ($7.99)

This pack contains some eye-catching four-wheeled beauties (15 to be exact); like the Red Bull X2011, the newest version of the race car designed by Adrian Newey, head engineer of Red Bull Racing and Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi, which throws away regulations for the pursuit of the ultimate racing machine (albeit a fictional one.) Call me a little less ambitious, but I would rather have the Nissan GT-R R35 Touring Car sitting my garage, but hey, different strokes and all that.

The next game in the Only On PSN campaign and not just one, but two classic SNK arcade games in this week’s drop of new PlayStation Network Releases for October 11th, 2011.

Welcome to week two of October 2011, and in typical fashion it’s time once again to survey the new field of goods from the PlayStation Network. Starting with, the continuation of this month’s official theme — Only On PSN — and the next game up on that showcase’s block, Sideway: New York. Developed by Canadian-located Playbrains studios, Sideways could be best described as “graffiti art taking on a game of its own,” or to be more exact, a platform game of its own.

You play as Nox, a young graffiti artist in The Big Apple, New York City, who just made the very wrong mistake of painting over the wrong guy’s tag, and in this on-the-streets scenario it so happens to be a fellow tagger called evil Spray. Yikes, with a name like that you know you done goofed big — because as it plays out, he soon sends Nox to a world where he himself has become a piece of graffiti art, bound to the walls of buildings.

For the most part Sideway: New York isn’t trying to cross that many new rivers in it’s platformer gameplay — you collect items, use graffiti to defeat enemies & obstacles, and so forth — but with the way it’s amazingly & beautifully presented (that goes for its conceptualized too,) it certainly is a game worth checking out. If you have a PlayStation Plus account, Sideway is 20% off, dropping it from it’s standard $9.99 price to $7.99. Savings, savings galore of course, but what about classic arcade games galore?

Ah, then you are in luck this week because two such arcade games will be available as part of SNK Playmore’s NEOGEO Station. From 1998, Metal Slug 2, and from 1996, The King of Fighters ’96. Both games, as with every release, in the NEOGEO Station catalog include tons of cool fan-focused options and modes to play around with, including online multiplayer, and best of all, they are quality ports of their arcade counterpart (four-button arcade joystick sold separately!)

Lastly, because of the recent attempted attack on the PlayStation Network, be sure to be on the look out for any fishy activity and as always practice safe shopping!

Start your engines and get ready for an arcade blast from the past with the release of Daytona USA for the PlayStation Network this late October.

It’s the return of a classic racing game, which whenever gets mentioned, some folks can’t resist breaking out into fits of humming, Doot do doot do doot do doot do doot dooooo! Daytonaaaaaaaaa! That’s right, Sega’s Daytona USA is back and racing into digital storefronts October 25th, and with much warm welcome, this version is promised to be a polished port of the 1993 arcade hit that won over players with it’s absolute thrilling gameplay and killer soundtrack.

Agreeably, that much of Daytona USA has been safely left in tact by Sega, but taking note of the widescreen age that is modern gaming, it’s being wonderfully presented in an “enhanced 16:9 widescreen format.” Beyond just looks though, this port will include several attention-grabbing modes too, such as an Arcade Mode, Survival & Time Trial Modes, Online Mode for up to 8 racers — and for those who just can’t get enough of that boss-like music, an actual Karaoke Mode. Hey! It’s all in the loving spirit of what Daytona USA is truly all about!

Plus it’s only going for $9.99 on the PlayStation Store when it releases. Fantastic, I say!

Can not wait for some Daytona USA. I also can not wait for Assassin’s Creed: Revelations coming out next month or the PlayStation Vita — which, I know, I know, hasn’t been given an exact release date yet. But oh how I’m feeling the hype on that beautiful piece of Sony hardware.

Mass PSN Hack Attempt Detected By Sony Online Security Task Force

93,000 accounts have been suspended in a mass hack attempt to gain entry into the PlayStation Network.

After the events that took place around April, Sony’s entertainment division took immense steps, including the hiring of a former Deputy Under Secretary with the U. S. Department of Homeland Security, to ensure that such a severe security breach, which oh-by-the-way cost the company $171 million to fix, would never happen again. Now it seems that according to reports, that new line of defense was just put to the test.

Sony has recently confirmed to both media outlets and its customers about an attempted illegal hack on the PlayStation Network that was detected by the company’s online security task force. In a no-bull post on the PlayStation Blog, Phillip Reitinger, the Senior Vice President & Chief Information Security Officer for Sony, described the incident as an unknown outside entity trying to perform a simultaneous mass log-in, using a large sum of account names and passwords acquired elsewhere online, to crack into the network’s database.

And while 93,00 accounts were compromised during this brief alarming incident, thankfully no major information, mainly credit card info, had been stolen in this case and the accounts that were effected, this includes some Sony Online Entertainment accounts too, were shut down before any true damage was done. If your PSN account was somehow in the line of fire of this tried attack, you’ll soon receive a notice via email to change your password. So please, be on the look out for such a message in the following days and make sure to report any suspicious activity that you might see with any Sony-tied account.

Lastly, and not that they need congratulations on doing a job that is, well, their job, a huge thumbs up has to go towards Sony for being immediately upfront & clear about this security breach and not ill-prepared like they were when the PlayStation Network went down for more than a month’s time. It certainly makes for sound knowledge and eased worries that the company has really been taking matters like this with the highest priority possible.

Available September 27th, 2011 — Sony unveils it’s new video service, the PSN exclusive Rochard, and Resident Evil Code Veronica X HD.

It could very well be the first look at what Sony has planned for its eventual revamp of the PlayStation Store sometime down the pipeline, but for now it’s just a new addition (along with the other additions we mentioned before) to the video section on your PlayStation 3, that for the time being, is only available to PlayStation Plus members. Branded the “Video Unlimited — preview” App – the handy application gives users a simpler means to browse, search and discover their favorite movies and TV shows.

Sleek, stylish, and kinda like The Matrix (okay maybe not), managing through the library of more than 40,000 movies and TV episodes has never been so simple or at least that’s the impression from previewers (click here to see it in action.) And hopefully, we’ll soon learn when the Video Unlimited app will be ready to download for the rest of the PlayStation Nation.

Now onto something more compelling to everyone, games. This time it’s a PSN exclusive title by Recoil Games called Rochard. Astro-miners, gravity guns, and side-scrolling action in one digital package — it’s here certainly all here, as you play the role of John Rochard, who must fend off space bandits by using said gravity gun to drop nearby objects on them like an anvil on a cartoon character.

Which actually makes sense just looking at that cartoonish visual style — and quite cool it is as well, almost Bionic Commando: Rearmed-esque. There is a demo for Rochard on the storefront, if said description has you interested but if your looking for something more gritty then there’s part two of the 15th anniversary party for Resident Evil, with Resident Evil Code Veronica X HD.

Released on the Sega Dreamcast, Code Veronica is the fourth installment in Capcom’s survival horror series and serves as a side-step of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis’s traits in terms of fixed-corner camera angles that were abandoned in Resident Evil 4 (released last week too!) It’s still an interesting game to explore though, and really expands the narrative of the series — giving more background information about the Umbrella Corporation.

All the amenities that were given to Resident Evil 4 HD are present in this version, with polished HD graphics and trophy support that make this a perfect get for any Resident Evil fan who hasn’t managed to play the original.

Resident Evil 4 and lots more (including a wimpy firmware update) in this week’s releases for the PlayStation Network, September 20, 2011.

About a month after the last firmware update, which integrated automatic download, trophy sync, and cloud save uploads to the PlayStation 3 ecosystem, comes fancy new update 3.72. But hold on to your cyber-horses — this firmware revision adds nothing and is just a measly system calibration by Sony. So yeah… nothing else to see here…

Now back to our regularly scheduled PlayStation Network Releases!

This week we welcome, as part of this survival-horror action series’ 15th anniversary celebration, a special title that is consider a true videogame masterpiece that helped change the 3rd-person shooter landscape. Directed by Shinji Mikami, considered a gaming luminary in his own right — it’s one of 2005′s best games of the year, Resident Evil 4.

Available as a downloadable via the PlayStation Store for $19.99US, the Resident Evil Revival Selection version of Resident Evil 4 includes updated high-def graphics, the bonus content such as the Separate Ways scenario, and trophy support. Beyond that though, nothing else has been altered in-game — preserving this Capcom classic in all its glory. Can I get a, yo diggity! Yo diggity!

For PlayStation Plus subscribers it seems this week will be the best opportunity to get your Umbrella Corporation defeating funk on, with all three previous Resident Evil outings, Resident Evil Director’s Cut, Resident Evil 2, and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis for free! That’s a deal no one should pass up, and neither should you. Now where’s that Resident Evil 6… nothing about it was reported from Tokyo Game Show 2011, just more news about the PlayStation Vita. I guess that’s better then nothing, I suppose.

Sega’s Renegade Ops & Ubisoft’s From Dust — ready for your gaming needs on the September 13th update of the PlayStation Network.

Just because Tokyo Game Show 2011 is going on and attention spans are center focused on that, doesn’t mean we haven’t forgot about what’s hot and fresh on the PlayStation Network this week. We have two particular gems that are certainly worth your time, and possibly money, so let’s get right to them shall we!

As the PlayStation Network PLAY event draws to a close, much like the summer weather around the country, it does so with Sega’s Renegade Ops, a top-down vehicular combat game from Avalanche Studios (hey, the guys who did Just Cause.) Specifically where it’s at for this digital-download is it’s 4 player co-operative play that gives players tons of different weapons and automobiles to do battle in.

There’s also a single player campaign in case you’re wondering (offline two-player split screen as well) that is a blast to play! No seriously, a lot of blasts from what I can tell from images and videos.

A long time ago, which isn’t so long ago if you think about it, but this industry moves so fast that noteworthy items go by the wayside quickly, umm anyway… there were two exceptional games created by two now legendary game designers. Populous, developed by Peter Molyneux, and Out of This World, developed by Eric Chahi.

Today, and available now through the PlayStation Store, we have one of those men trying their hand at making a spiritual successor to one particular aforementioned title. In this scenario, it’s Eric Chahi with Ubisoft’s From Dust, a truly unique god game that takes its inspirational cues from Peter Molyneux’s Populous.

From Dust, like many god games, places players in the role of controlling the world, strategically, on a large scale. Where in lies the wrinkle though in this game, is that instead of controlling people — you control environmental elements of soil, lava and water in an effort to save, and enlighten, a nomadic tribe. All in real time, and all with interesting combinations that greatly effect the world and the tribes people that live on it.

What I find quite alluring about From Dust are it’s visuals. Something about it’s primitive-man like themes mixed with bright colorful splashes of scenery, really pop out. And with a time-killer of genre that are god games, that’s certainly a plus when you’ll be staring at a them for such a long period.
