Sony has just issued a new firmware update for the PlayStation 3 — but don’t be in such a rush to download it. Find out why, after the jump.

If “system stability” is of great importance to you, and it probably should with the latest hack attempt recently, then you should be happy to know that the new PlayStation 3 firmware update 3.73 does just that (exactly how wasn’t informed). Actually, that’s pretty much all this update does according to Sony; yeah, sorry guys, no major system-feature additions this go around.

Straight from the official PlayStation Twitter account many hours ago, this is what the release info about the new update had to say:

A new, non-mandatory PS3 firmware update, v3.73, is now available. Stability during use of certain PS3 format software has been improved. – @PlayStation on Twitter

There you have it folks, nothing more, nothing less.

So it’s up to you if you want to waste a couple of minutes and bandwidth on simple software revision, and hey, it might just save your life! No I’m kidding, it totally won’t. This update is probably the most flattest of system updates ever, thankfully with the internet at our disposal excitement is at every corner — such as a Japanese gamer beating Dark Souls in under 2 hours. Amazing!

New PlayStation 3 Firmware Adds Cloud-Based Game Saves and More

PlayStation Plus subscribers receive the ability to back-up their game saves through a new firmware 3.60 feature available now.

The latest firmware, software update 3.60, for the PlayStation 3 is up live for download, and aside from the head-scratching option of choosing the amount of time before a controller turns off after you’ve used it, the update also brings with it a sweet cloud-based game save service for members of the paid PlayStation Network subscription service PlayStation Plus.

Before some of you ask what a cloud is doing in your PlayStation 3 and slowly reach for an umbrella or a yellow raincoat; a cloud-based save service basically allows one to save data on a secured server via the internet and access it from any other device. In this instance with software update 3.60 (at least for PlayStation Plus subscribers,) game saves can be uploaded for back-up purposes and played from any PlayStation 3 console.

Up to 150MB of space (with a max of 1,000 saves) will be allotted to individual PlayStation Network accounts to store PlayStation 3 game save data, which also includes copy-prohibited files. The only small-print catch is that users can only restore deleted files once every 24 hours. Now, most PlayStation 3 games will work with the cloud-based service for game saves, and in the future, later titles will incorporate the ability to offer online storage as an option.

Finally, not noted in the description or Sony’s press release for the software 3.60 update is a beef-up of the security for the PlayStation 3 against hackers that have lately cracked open the console’s operating system. One hacker in particular, a creator of the PlayStation 3 jailbreak PSFreedom, claimed that Sony had found a way to plug up security holes with the recent update by removal of a certain system key. This doesn’t mean that the PlayStation 3 isn’t protected from future exploits though, only that hackers will have to find another way to do so.

So be prepared to wait a while to play something on your PlayStation 3 (say like Ridge Racer Type 4 or perhaps PixelJunk Shooter 2) as it updates the firmware – your patience will be much rewarded.

New PS3 Firmware 3.40 Update Available for Download…granting great new features

The new PS3 Firmware 3.40 is now available to download and includes some great new features, making it worthwhile for die-hard PS3 fans to make the update.

This new Playstation 3.40 Firmware Update finally includes the newest Playstation Plus membership which was announced in the latest E3. Playstation Plus grans users new options for expansion and enhancing the PS3 experience with additional features, content and more. This is in addition to the PSN, which remains free but does not have the ‘extras’ provided in the Plus membership.

PS3 Photo Gallery feature is now added, which allows Playstation fans to share Photos on Facebook and Picassa including commenting, uploading and browsing through pictures.

PS3 Video Editing is a fun feature that many PS3 fans would appreciate, for you will be able to upload and edit your PS3 Videos and now share them on Facebook and Youtube. Practically bringing a fun and more
intuitive Net features straight to your Playstation 3…all found on the XrossMediaBar (XMB) Content Star Rating for easy rating of content found on the Playstation Store.

Now Playstation added Power Save Settings to be able and set an auto-off time period among others extras.

Lastly, besides the newest 3.40 PS3 Firmware, a new Playstation Network Application is being launched on Facebook, allowing for easier integration between your PS3 and Facebook…as to share purchases, trophies, etc.

PS3 3.30 Firmware Update Gets Us Ready for 3D Gaming

Good news from Playstation!, the newest PS3 3.30 Firmware update is prepping the Playstation 3 for 3D gaming and 3D Movie experience, making the PS3 again a rather exciting console to own.

Unlike the previous PS3 3.21 update which was kind of a bummer for taking away the “Other OS” and making so mandatory, the newest update is getting us ready for a whole new world of 3D gaming, that has been so exciting with all the announcements. It is true that not everyone will be able to upgrade to the new Sony 3D TV’s, but just the 3D possibility coming to the home gaming world is pretty cool in itself.

In addition to 3D prepping, the newest update is also offering enhanced Trophy sorting, so you could find it easier to show off and compare your various achievements in the PSN.

PS3 Firmware Update 2.53 Download

PS3 Updates continue to arrive, and the newest Firmware 2.53 Version is adding Adobe Flash Support and is now available for Download.

With new additions coming so quickly, we do not always need to do a Firmware Update for our PS3. In case you are one of the few that is actually using the Playstation 3 Browser, this newest 2.53 Version Update may not be necessary at the moment. Yes, it is exciting to Download the PS3 Firmware and know that all is up to date, but sometimes waiting is good as well.

Who knows, maybe people would actually enjoy using the PS3 Browser more often now that there is the flash support with this newest Firmware Update and also combining the Snap On PS3 Controller Keyboard.
