Sony Holds Panel For Next Generation Portable At GDC 2011

This is a post from Ps3 Maven who bring you the best play station 3, Games, Mods and News.

At the Game Developers Conference, Sony’s successor to the PSP was the headline topic that featured a quick demo of its augmented reality functions.

Compared to Nintendo’s almost pre-E3 like event at this year’s Game Developers Conference, Sony’s own panel was respectfully low-key and full of Power Point slides, though they both where headlined a bit by their own upcoming portable gaming device. In Sony’s corner it was the tentatively named Next Generation Portable.

Now, the NGP panel at GDC didn’t have sweet announcements of Netflix or free Wi-Fi access at over thousands of locations (although who knows that might come later) – the event mostly served as a media refresher and a repeat of already established information about the NGP since its Tokyo debut in late January.

It even managed to serve as a clear up of misinformation that had nested quickly through out the web. At the start of the panel, main speaker David Coombes, a platform research manager for Sony Computer Entertainment America, quickly addressed the wide speculation about the true processing power of the NGP (rumored to be rivaled to the PlayStation 3,) and downplayed that notion as being not true.

“Some people in the press have said wow, this thing… could be as powerful as PS3. Well, it’s [NGP] not going to run at 2GHz because the battery would last five minutes,” Coombes said. “And it would probably set fire to your pants.” Brings a new meaning to hot pants, doesn’t it.

Later on in the panel, Tsutomu Horikawa, a director from Sony Computer Entertainment International’s software solution development department in Tokyo, took over and demoed the augmented reality functions of the NGP – displaying both a video game character come to life by scanning a game cover and a Jurassic Park sized T-Rex towering over him on the NGP’s screen.

Here’s a quick run down of what else was highlighted at Sony’s NGP panel at GDC:

PowerVR SGX543MP4+ GPU “which should deliver impressive video rendering.”

RAM is closer to the PlayStation 3 than to the PSP. No official number yet.

GPS is included in 3G units only, but Wi-Fi only units can do positioning through Skyhook Wireless – a system that uses data at Wi-Fi hotspots to coordinate accurate location information.

NGP game cards will be 2GB to 4GB max for launch titles, by contrast a PS3 game uses 9GB – meaning “lots of room for developers to create to create huge, complicated software and datasets.”

Powerful camera with head tracking capabilities, and optimized for low-light, high speed video.

Pressure sensitive multi-touch OLED screen and touch pad.

Sad to say, this might be the last droplets of information about the NGP until June, where it’s sure to be front stage and center at this years E3, along with a landslide of game demos like the Uncharted game that is being developed by SCE Bend Studios.

Fight against demented-looking creatures and explore the deeper mysteries behind the third entry to the mind-provoking survival-horror series by Square Enix.

If only 3rd birthdays were this exciting; no lousy clowns or lackluster balloon animals, instead you get to body swap with people and blast gruesome monsters while looking all cool and stylish – ala the actual The 3rd Birthday coming to the PlayStation Portable in March.

The 3rd Birthday is the next title in the Parasite Eve series from Final Fantasy makers Square Enix, and is an action role-playing game that blends together character-driven plot and third-person shooting action to recreate a big-screen sci-fi thriller (no 3D glasses required thank goodness) all on the mobile confines of a PSP system.

Now in this psychological creature-feature, a plague of weird freaky-looking beings – called the Twisted – have ascended upon on the city of Manhattan, and once again it’s up to Parasite Eve’s leading heroine, Aya Brea, to take to the streets and eliminate this new mutant threat by using a special – sometimes memory losing ability – called Overdive.

By using Overdive, Aya can switch bodies on-the-fly with one of her CTI (Counter Twisted Investigation) team members, allowing for real-time strategic placement against enemies in the combat zone. She also has Liberation, a separate but equally useful ability that provides Aya with a mighty burst of energy and superhuman speed to defeat and evade enemies.

Japan has already blown out the candles on their ‘The 3rd Birthday’-cake with the release of the game back in December of last year, but now Square Enix has shifted their focus on the North American and European release, even as far as getting some Hollywood talent – Yvonne Strahovski (NBC’s Chuck) to voice Aya and Jensen Ackles (CW’s Supernatural) to voice Kyle Madigan, Aya’s male cohort from Parasite Eve II and implied love interest.

Square Enix is also compiling a special ‘TWISTED EDITION’ package, available in Europe only (don’t shoot the messenger please, he only brings the news,) with Aya’s pretty face posted all over a hard-cover box, 48-page art book, and two deluxe lithographs.

The 3rd Birthday will hit North American store shelves on March 29, and will retail for $29.99. Square Enix hasn’t specified as of yet whether there will be a digital copy of the game on the PlayStation Store for all you (not so) lucky PSP go users… and it probably might stay that way (again I only spread news, not make it!)

Be sure you keep a good look out on The 3rd Birthday, and to mind the time you should read up on the TurboGrafx-16 and a batch of classic games coming to the PlayStation Network, or a Sony Bravia television with a built in PlayStation 2 – sounds info-tastic!

Portable Uncharted & More Games In Development For Sony’s NGP

This is a post from Ps3 Maven who bring you the best play station 3, Games, Mods and News.

At the recent reveal for Sony’s next portable machine, Nathan Drake and a group of other interesting first-party games lined-up to show off the true power of the successor to the PSP.

Bang-a-gong, it is on! A week after Nintendo announced an American launch price and date for the Nintendo 3DS, Sony seemed to wave their own arms in a collective – “Hey! We’re here too” – with the unveiling of their next on-the-go gaming machine, the temporarily codenamed “NGP” (Next Generation Portable.)

We’ve already learned most of the in-and-outs to the “NGP,” from its top and rear touch capabilities, dual-analog sticks, and a graphics engine that can create almost near PlayStation 3 level visuals – a feat that was exampled in the few first-party games that were shown along side the “NGP” at Sony’s PlayStation Meeting.

The first of these, and no doubt the most impressive, was a portable Uncharted game that is – yes, yes – based off the very same series made famous by developer Naughty Dog. This mobile version though is being made by SCE Bend Studio (Logan’s Shadow, Resistance: Retribution) with Naughty Dog overseeing, and from initial impressions look fantastic, if not uncannily similar to its HD console big brother.

It also plays exactly the same way too, with some of the new features of the “NGP” blended in for good measure: with the touch screen you can jump over obstacles, swipe the device’s back to climb a rope, gently rock the unit back and forth to swing across with a vine, and a “camera mode” that lets look around your environment and take pictures.

One other first-party game I should note is Little Deviants, which shows off the functionality of the rear touch-pad. The game works by touching the back of the “NGP,” and by doing so, players create a small hill in the game world with their finger that can, by the force of physics, push a ball around a tiny miniature golf-like course.

Sony also managed to show a small clip of other first party “NGP” games that are currently in-development. In the video below you’ll find short glimpses of Hot Shots Golf, LittleBigPlanet, WipEout, Killzone, and Resistance, along with some new IPs such as Gravity Daze, Reality Fighters, Smart As, and Broken.

Keep it hear for all news PlayStation 3, including Lara Croft heading to the PlayStation 3, in an awesome three game HD collection coming in March, and pinball fun featuring Spider-Man and his super-powered friends.

Sony headquarters in Tokyo, Japan was the place to be on Thursday as the entertainment giant held an all so special industry event to finally pull the curtain off what everyone has been rocking in their computer chairs for, the next PlayStation Portable, or as it’s currently being codenamed “NGP.”

“NGP” stands for “Next Generation Portable,” a device that looks a lot like the original PlayStation Portable, but brings a lot of new to the table, including two analog sticks (obligatory: about time,) a beautiful screen with touch capabilities, and a powerful engine that seems to provide an almost near PlayStation 3 level of graphics.
