Sony’s next “It seriously only does everything” portable gaming machine now has a release date outside of Japan, from North America to Europe too.

About two months or so after it goes on sale in it’s native country of Japan, the latest and possibly greatest piece of Sony handheld tech will be available on North American & European store shelves (Middle East, Australia too!)  February 22nd, 2012 — as announced not so long ago by the American head honcho of  Sony Computer Entertainment, and BFF of Kevin Butler don’t forget, Mr. Jack Tretton.

Come to think of it… I guess we were off a bit off from all those March release rumors, huh? And boy for once, does it ever feel so right being so wrong! With that said, it’s time to save up your pretty pennies for a portable gaming machine that out of the box is on non-stop “beast mode” with its beautiful 5 inch OLED screen (touch-capable, mind you), twin analog-sticks, and rear touch-pad included in a very stylish form. Though I wish I could have the option for the white color variant — but I ain’t even mad.

Certainly, yes, I won’t lie, I am drinking the PS Vita cool-aid like there’s no tomorrow straight out of the Sony cup, but I just don’t care! It seems from the onset that Sony has made many smart, truly logical steps (leaving many wondering if a “bizzarro Sony” had mysteriously taken its place) to avoid the wreck of a situation the PlayStation Portable clearly nose-dived into a while back; we can only hope this trend continues though.

We don’t have any info about which games will be landing alongside the Vita in February. Going by the list of games from the Japanese launch, I would take a wager and say that a jolly good portion of those titles might make the trip over here. Specific games like Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom, and Gravity Rush will no doubt be at U.S. retailers day one. Sony gives its fans a look at the box & some of the launch day apps for the PlayStation Vita.

The Japanese launch for the PlayStation Vita is in late December, and a release date for the dual-touch dual-analog stick machine elsewhere throughout the globe is many months away. If by reading the tea leaves correctly, that could mean around Springtime 2012 — which is still a long way off from now.

Regardless of the time frame though, Sony has recently started to kick-off the hype around that future launch-day by presenting two things that might be of some interest to those who have already gone full “takemymoney.jpg” for the Vita. The first of which is a glimpse at the European box (3G enabled version,) which as you can see is very very blue. I happen to like it, lots.

Likely, this probably will be the same box for the Vita in North America, sans the green PEGI 3 square with an ESRB one. I’m pretty sure the talk of boxes for gaming hardware excites some like a bowl of Total brand cereal for breakfast, so I’ll just move on to the launch day apps.

Today I’ve gone ahead and, with help from Sony, assembled an informative list with full details about the features & services of each “App” that will come pre-installed with the PlayStation Vita. If you’re looking for apps for video content and the like, but come up empty — don’t worry — there will be some form of video application for the Vita — this is just a small taste of what will be available.

- Launch Day Apps -

Welcome Park: We invite you to the Welcome Park to explore and discover all of the brilliant features packed into PlayStation Vita through a series of mini-games.

Party: Fancy a chat while you’re gaming? Speak with your friends anytime you like with Party. The voice and text chat application allows you to talk to up to eight party members, no matter what you’re doing. Party also allows you to set up and jump in multiplayer games and chat with Friends while you play different games, bringing cross-game chat to PlayStation Vita.

PlayStation Store: A direct link to PlayStation Store where you will be able to download all PlayStation Vita games, trailers, DLC and apps.

Group Messaging: Another great way to contact your PlayStation Network friends is with a PSN Message. Send them an update or even a picture you’ve taken with your PS Vita to let them know whats going on. You can message your friends on PlayStation Portable and PlayStation 3, and you can have conversations with multiple people at once.

Photos: PlayStation Vita allows you to capture photos and this is the direct link to the camera and also the photo viewer application.

Near: An exclusive location based gaming network for PlayStation Vita. With near you can stay connected to all of your PlayStation Network friends and make new ones by sharing information about yourself, based on your location. Press the Update button and find new people based on where you are, challenge them to games or play cooperatively and enjoy a completely unique gaming experience on PS Vita. You can even send and receive new levels, unlocks and in-game items to enhance the way you play – everywhere you go will hold new surprises. You can view your friends’ game preferences, see how many trophies they’ve earned and compare your stats to see who the better player is.

Trophies: PlayStation Vita games will support Trophies and this app will store and track your Trophies earned on both PS Vita and PS3. It also allows you to compare your Trophies with your friends.

Music: A music player that will allow you to play your own tunes transferred to PlayStation Vita via a computer or PS3.

Friends: Your Friends List will allow you to search and keep in touch with your PSN Friends. Click on a friends profile to see what game they are playing on either PlayStation Vita or PlayStation 3. You can join their game, take a look at what you’ve played together recently or compare your trophy collections. You can also see your friends recent gaming activity and what they are doing now. In your profile you can share information about yourself. Choose an avatar that represents you best, add your friends and let the world know what you are playing.

Internet Browser: With the 5″ OLED Touchscreen, PlayStation Vita will offer a great web browsing experience over Wi-Fi and 3G.
