After the longest console cycle in recent history, the PS4 has finally been announced. Sony has put a lot on our plates so let’s go straight to the facts.

In a move that pretty much didn’t surprise anyone, Sony’s event of today was all about the successor of the PS3, the long-awaited and long-debated PlayStation 4. That’s right, the new console is just called PS4, not Orbis, after all, and to be honest, we sort of prefer it that way! Sony showed off the potential of the new machine along with an official look at the new DualShock, which introduces a couple new features such as a touchscreen akin to the back screen of the PS Vita, a share button to post screenshots or videos anywhere, anytime, and “improved rumble functions”. We didn’t get to look at the console itself, too, a situation akin to that of the Wii U’s debut back in E3 2011.

Speaking of the Playstation 4 hardware, console architect Mark Cerny explained that “the development of a next-gen platform started about five years ago” and that Sony was aiming to “free developers from technological barriers.” Cerny is one of the key names in the industry, and has worked since the Atari days and in companies as diverse as Sega of Japan and Universal Interactive Studios.

The PlayStation 4 is supposed to be a console “by game creators for game creators”, with its architecture being that of “a PC, but supercharged.” In raw numbers, the PS4 uses the X86 CPU with 8GB of memory and a local hard drive which we don’t know how big it’ll be yet. It uses APU technology and GDDR5 memory, which is typically reserved for “top of the line, high end graphics cards.”

While all of this sounds incredible, the console has just been announced, so as of now we don’t have an official price (some rumors hint just above $400 USD), with a launch window for “holiday 2013″. What are your thoughts? Let us know all about it in the comments section.

Sony has been repeating non-stop for the last few months how there’s no successor for the PS3 in the near horizon, yet fans expect a new incarnation of the PlayStation every day now. For those who dare to dream, like Joe Dumary, Sony’s words hold no meaning at all. They want the future and they want it now! And if Sony is not gonna give them a new machine, they might as well develop their own.

Introducing, the PS4 by Joe Dumary, aka, The First Smart Console in the world. The console, part of the PlayEco line, uses 0 watts in standby. With the “ECO Restart” function, the player may save their game and turn off the console… turn it on and resume the game without a load where they left off.

The console looks like a mixture between a PlayStation 2 Slim and a Memory Card, so it has a lot of retro appeal, while providing the best of the next generation at the same time. It is made of 60% recycled material, a magnesium alloy and carbon (25%), light, weighs only 2.1 KG, and consumes only 90 watts. Another note on power management, this machine is smart and after 30 minutes of play, draws on its reserves by automatically cutting the power for 5 minutes. So you play on Playr (playreserve) and restarts the flow after 5 minutes to save electricity. In case of a short-circuit, players do not lose their data … the PS4 will take over with playreserve and automatically save the game leaving the players up where they left off.

Compatibility with PS Vita allows players to use it as a remote control for browsing the Internet or play some games using the touch capabilities. Also, the PS4 is compatible with Sony tabs and all Sony devices, and capable multitasking. Users will be able to do several things at once like, say, pause the game, go to the PlayStation Community Gaming, watch videos on Youtube application and resume the game.

Also, you might be wondering what is Playstation Community-Gaming. In Dumary’s words, it’s “a portal dedicated to gamers, or you can chat (text or video) with other players, share your games, walkthroughs, or connect with players having the same game with the search function.”

And now that we’ve covered the connectivity functions, we might as well talk about Dumary’s hardware: 1.5TB HDD, Full 3D 4K2K compatible, DLNA, DPhdmi (HDMI Connect), 3D Blu-ray (Blu Ray “DEUCE” Compatible: 3 times more data than the classic blu ray disc), USB 3.0, DPConnect Bravia Sync, Qriocity, Sony Ericsson sync, Cloud Saving, and live TV and applications.The PS4 also features DPHDMI (or HDMI Connect): If users do not have a compatible DPConnect TV’s, the DPHDMI allows to connect the console to your TV wirelessly. All audio systems are detected automatically, too. Excited yet? Combining this exciting hardware and connectivity options could lead to smarter games: some games support the “Open Reality”, which means they will reproduce the weather and time in real time.

Thanks to DPConnect-Advanced the console connects wirelessly to compatible DPConnect TV’s. users do not need HDMI or other audio-video cables, as the console will automatically detect TVs and select according to the resolution of the screen by default, all in less than 4ms. With DPConnect Advanced, you could play with two (or six) players on two (or six) different TVs with the same console, so everyone could see his game without split screen (for some shows like E3, Tokyo Game, and so on, for example ). The distance between the console and the TV should be 7.5m maximum.

The controller has a light sensor (for screen luminosity), an option screen to adjust settings such as the rigidity of the analog sticks (the stick will be difficult to maneuver in some parts of certain games for total immersion), and the battery level. The screen allows players to access certain options such as battery management, and some option of the PS4 console (it allows for adjustments to the console without pause, for example). Controls charge via USB or inductive charging. One-touch power button, and all options appear. Dreamy, huh?

Whoever said video games make you play it all “in a box”? Questioning this basic assumption of people that video games limit your experience of the real, Alfredo Tejeda has created two cool conceptual posters to promote the PSFour concept. The PS4 concept may not even be ready as a product or even as an idea, but the promotional posters by Alfredo certainly seem to allow us to imagine a lot about it.

The poster hardly has any copy in it, and mostly has a great visual element to it. The first poster gently asserts “the all new PSFour” and next to it the PSFour box is ripped off by the reality of football players kicking through it. The idea seems to stress the fact that the new version of the PlayStation console would be so realistic that you would no longer feel that a game is trapped “in a box”.

Similarly, the second poster features Dhalsim from Street Fighter who burns his way through the box, to deliver the kind of action which would make you feel that it is all happening for real. Stressing the importance and expectations of video game fans for a greater level of real-feel, Alfredo has certainly created two amazing promotional posters for the PSFour. New PS4 Game Console Design Concept with Touchscreen Glass Panel

PS3 Slim has been just released and we all have been raving about how cool the new and sleek console really is. However, that is still PS3 and we must be a long way from PS4. If you think it is too early to think about PS4, designer Tai Chiem thinks otherwise.

He has gone ahead and designed a conceptual PS4 which comes with a touch screen glass panel and some futuristic looks to die for. One can’t but be amazed at the designer’s ingenuity at designing the PS4 with the strange globular “thing” in the glass panel. That is extremely creative, as many designers were when they designed the PS3 Mods prior to its release.

Also, it is really amazing that such a futuristic design could actually look so stylish and chic and also simple. If you take a look at the PS4 controller, you would realize that there isn’t anything new in the shape, but it certainly looks different with all the transparent glass and the works. However, if you happen to drop the controller during one of the violent gaming sessions, you might have to buy a new one.

If the controller is made of glass too, you may face such risks but you could always be a little careful when it comes to playing with something so cool as this. I would love to get this for myself.

Since it is a concept, there is no information about when it would be manufactured or if it would be available ever in the market. If Sony is impressed with this design perhaps you just might see it in real! Meanwhile, you could take a look at all the specs of the PS3 Slim, which does not look bad itself.
