PSN is Back! (Sort of)

This is a post from Ps3 Maven who bring you the best play station 3, Games, Mods and News.

Let’s get straight to the point: this is the announcement fans were waiting for. Since today, and depending of the area of the world you live in, the PSN service is gonna be back online.According to the PlayStation blog, several regions of the USA are gonna be able to use at least some services of PSN as of now. The first service that is gonna see its triumphant return is online play: yes, you can now go back to shooting your friends in your favorite FPS. The regions where the service is already working can be seen in the following map.

Sony admitted there might be some delay in some areas, but they’re working around the clock to fix it. To further improve security measures, Sony also released a new firmware update which is absolutely required to go back online. Not only that, but the company is asking players and users around the world to change their password from the original PS3/PSP console where they created their PSN name, or a validated e-mail account just to be on the safe side.

Also, as some players had felt disappointment towards Sony’s reaction, Kazuo Hirai, the Sr. Director, Corporate Communications & and Social Media voice of Sony, released a video where he personally apologized in name of the company, and also explained the process and stages of bringing the PSN back online.

Non-American (and some American) players will have to wait a bit longer, but soon enough you will be able to enjoy PSN back in full force. So, now, are you ready to go back to gaming online? Which is going to be your first game? Also, can you forgive Sony? We are waiting to read your comments.

Update on PSN Restoration Timeline

This is a post from Ps3 Maven who bring you the best play station 3, Games, Mods and News.

After initial reports that PSN, and all it’s other services (including Qriocity) would be back by May 31th, reports that even made it to the Bloomberg publications, Sony updated their PSN blog with some fresh news.

The good news are the original plan of restoring every service by May 31th seems to still be holding but, sadly, just informally as Sony has made no promises: as the company is in the process of adopting a new, improved, and better security system, the process might or not be delayed.

Patrick Seybold said on the PlayStation Blog that “[he knows] you all want to know exactly when the services will be restored. At this time, [he] can’t give you an exact date, as it will likely be at least a few more days. We’re terribly sorry for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience as we work through this process.”

On this end, we can wait a few more days if it means extra security measures, for if the incidents with hackers these last months have proven anything, it is that we’d rather be safe than sorry.

The Aftermath Of The PlayStation Network Hacker Attack

This is a post from Ps3 Maven who bring you the best play station 3, Games, Mods and News.

What ramifications does Sony face after the online attack which took down the PlayStation Network — and what will happen in the days to come?

Sony’s current salesman pitch is “make.believe,” and the owners of the PlayStation brand will have to make their customers believe once again in their online infrastructure after it was brought down by hackers the last week of April; an attack which also lead to the theft of over thousands of user’s personal information.

The effect of PSN being down has been a legitimate disaster for the Japan-based electronics giant – with critical scrutiny by the press at large, several class action lawsuits against Sony in works, and calls for answers from the United States Congress. Ho-boy, if they’re involved you know things have gotten serious.

If anything the big lesson to be learned here, and one Sony is getting a full dose of right now, is that security is extremely important in this new online age – because as we’ve seen, there is an unruly mob comprised of unidentifiable persons that wish to do harm to the world wide web. If I can borrow a line from The Dark Knight: “Some men just want to watch the world burn.”

Thankfully, and my dumb gloomy-doomy thoughts aside, even after the fire manages to destroy all, you can still rebuild, and that’s what Sony has been reportedly doing during the PlayStation Network’s downtime. Bringing in high-level security pros, along with the F.B.I.’s help, Sony is working vigilantly around the clock to rebuild an online infrastructure that hopeful can stand up to the worst possible security breach.

They’ve also planed a “welcome back” program (at a press event where the executives bowed and apologized in front a media full crowd) which will include free downloads of selected PlayStation content (most likely PS3 and PSP games,) 30 days of free PlayStation Plus for new and existing users, and for Qriocity members, 30 days of free services. Sony is also offering PSN users free identity theft protection for a whole year.

Will that be enough for people to believe in Sony and the PlayStation Network once again? An honest good question and one that we will have to see when online services hopefully start back up and are fully operation sometime around the time this article gets published.

Personally, knowing how full-well how this current consumer age acts, we might look back at this time and think what all the ruckus was truly all about (although I’m always up for eating crow!) I mean, look how fast Microsoft was able to bounce back from all those “Red Ring of Death” Xbox 360 issues they faced not so long ago. So right now all we can do is wait and see – again it hasn’t a really good week for Sony, what with the PlayStation Network down and the PSPgo ending production. Hopefully next month’s E3 will spark some positive buzz for Sony.

Via: Joystiq
